Brevard, NC-Brevard manufacturer Stone Mountain Cabinetry and Millwork, Inc., will be expanding its facilities and growing its workforce. The expansion, which will take place in the calendar year 2016, and will result in a 3,500 square foot addition to the existing production facility. The expansion will coincide with the creation of 8 new full-time positions and an investment in real and business personal property of $285,000. The decision to expand in Transylvania County was aided by a North Carolina Department of Commerce Building Reuse Grant, a valuable economic development program designed to support job creation in rural North Carolina.
Stone Mountain Cabinetry and Millwork is a privately owned company founded in 2004, and is owned by Robert and Cindy Grieves. Prior to starting the company, the Grieves’ held professional careers in various design, process and construction capacities. After a visit to Transylvania County in the early 2000’s, the Grieves developed a passion for Brevard and western North Carolina. After moving to the community, Robert and Cindy built Stone Mountain Cabinetry and Millwork from the ground up.
The company spent its formative years as a reseller of factory built cabinets and relied exclusively on product lines manufactured by external partners in various parts of the country. In 2006, Stone Mountain established a custom woodworking shop capable of producing small volumes of specialty cabinetry products to fill a rapidly growing demand for quality-built wood products for residential and commercial application. Over the past decade the business further expanded into the custom and semi-custom woodworking segment. Over the past twelve years, growth has facilitated investments in additional employees, equipment and facilities. The existing team includes 7 full-time and 3 part-time staff members.
“Transylvania County is our home and we are proud to continue our tradition of fine woodworking and craftsmanship in Western North Carolina. Our company is thankful for the support of partners including the North Carolina Rural Division, Transylvania County and various workforce development partners who have worked together to support our unique business needs,” said Grieves.
“Stone Mountain Cabinetry and Millwork is an excellent example of a business that has evolved and achieved success in Transylvania County,” said Transylvania County Commission Chairman Mike Hawkins. “The career opportunities associated with employment with Stone Mountain Cabinetry and Millwork and similar niche manufacturers represent the type of quality employment our community wants for our friends and neighbors. On behalf of the Board of Commissioners I would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to Stone Mountain for choosing to expand in Transylvania County.”
Mark Tooley, Chairman of the Transylvania Economic Alliance added, “The Alliance’s primary goal is to support our local employers and to help our private sector partners realize expansion projects. Stone Mountain Cabinetry and Millwork is a valuable corporate citizen and our organization is excited to see this small business grow. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015 wages for manufacturing related positions in Transylvania County averaged $740 per week or $38,480 annually. When compared to the average wages of all other private sector employment, $30,992, we feel job growth in the advanced and niche manufacturing sectors signal positive growth for Transylvania County.”
