Interstate 26-Highway 280 Interchange Reaches Milestone

The North Carolina Department of Transportation continues to make progress on the Interstate 26-Highway 280 interchange located near the Asheville Regional Airport. The interchange enhancement project will transition this traditional interstate access point to a diverging diamond configuration resulting in a significant improvement to Transylvania County's primary interstate access point.

According to traffic engineering professionals diverging diamond interchanges allow for freer movement of traffic, are more efficient due to their ability to accommodate more truck and commercial traffic and are significantly safer with fewer conflict points. To accommodate necessary construction progress the existing bridge will be closed from 7:00 p.m. this Friday, November 13th until work is completed on Sunday or early Monday morning. Businesses planning for weekend shipments, deliveries or employee commuting patterns should take precautions and plan accordingly. Alternate routes include N.C. 191, US-64 and Butler Bridge Road.
